Gastroenterology & Hepatology
Experienced Digestive Disease Specialists
The Digestive System is made up of the Digestive Tract (esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon) and the Digestive Organs (liver, pancreas and biliary system). Doctors trained in conditions of the Digestive System are called Gastroenterologists.
Our team consists of 8 Gastroenterologists, a physician’s assistant and many nurses and medical assistants. Together we evaluate, treat and prevent many digestive diseases and symptoms.
Common GI symptoms include:
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Problems swallowing
- Weight loss
However, many non-GI problems can also cause these symptoms. It’s often best to see your primary care provider first and get a referral to GI if they need assistance. Our providers will take a thorough history and examine you. They may order additional tests such as labs, x-rays or endoscopic procedures. Ultimately our goal is to help you feel better and live a long and healthy life.
After examining your symptoms and your medical history—including any prescription and over-the-counter medications that might be contributing to your condition—your gastroenterologist will give you a physical examination. If necessary, you may need laboratory tests, imaging tests or a diagnostic procedure such as a colonoscopy or endoscopy in which a flexible, lighted scope is used to view your internal organs. Once the condition is diagnosed, there are a variety of procedures that can be used to treat the problem.
Common Conditions
Some of the diseases and conditions the gastroenterologists at WVMC routinely treat include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome, gallstones, constipation, diarrhea, Crohn’s disease, cirrhosis, peptic ulcer, ulcerative colitis and more.
